Beyond the Drawing Board: The Journey of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Monona Terrace
Level 3 – Gallery
Madison and Wisconsin were very important to Frank Lloyd Wright. His time spent on the Monona Terrace project is a testament of his passion for this area and his desire to bridge Lake Monona with downtown. A labor of love, Wright was compensated $250 in exchange for roughly 63,000 hours of staff time toward the project over a span of 21 years.Beyond the Drawing Board, the new multimedia gallery at Monona Terrace crafted by Boston-based firm Experience Design, tells the controversial 60 year story of Madison’s long awaited “dream civic center” and its tie to America’s greatest architect.
The gallery includes photos, videos, audio clips and artifacts, is free and open to the public, and is located on level 3 west below the Gift Shop on level 4. The gallery can be viewed daily during building hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
