If you’re coming to Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center for an event or wedding, you can rest easy knowing there are many wonderful hotels in Madison, WI to choose from that are in the downtown area. With nearly 1,000 hotel rooms within walking distance of Monona Terrace, hotel choices are available for every lifestyle and preference.
All hotels on our list are rated 9+ and “Exceptional” by guests on most review and reservation websites. Many have restaurants/bars, pools, fitness centers and all have amenities and accommodations you would expect from a nice hotel in the $150 – $350/night price range.
We understand that “near” is a subjective term, so our list of hotels in downtown Madison is in their proximity to Monona Terrace. However, a more comprehensive list of hotels in the greater Madison area can be found at Destination Madison.
Stay Next Door to Monona Terrace
The closest hotel you can possibly get to Monona Terrace is The Hilton Madison Monona Terrace, which is directly connected to Monona Terrace via a climate-controlled skybridge. Talk about convenience. Avoid inclement weather and sleep in a little longer!
If you’re okay with being just a few steps away, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Madison Downtown
is just across the street from our location and offers all the features and amenities you’d expect, including free breakfast and it’s pet-friendly (up to 60lbs).
Walking Distance Hotels
If the weather is nice, and you’re not too dressed up for your event or wedding at Monona Terrace, here are a few hotel options under 10 blocks from Monona Terrace and literally surround the State Capitol Building.
Located on the opposite side of the Capitol Building from our location is the majestic Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club. With outrageous views, this venerable hotel includes exclusive amenities and services you may not get at other hotels.
Unless the weather tells you otherwise, the AC Hotel by Marriott Madison Downtown is a five-minute walk from Monona Terrace and is replete with amenities, including multiple restaurants and bars, luxurious guest accommodations, and amazing views of the State Capitol Building.
Located on the opposite side of the Capitol Building from the AC Hotel is the Hyatt Place Madison/Downtown. Closer in proximity to the University, the Hyatt is a short stroll from Monona Terrace and is one of the most affordable on our list.
Get even closer to Monona Terrace and stay at the Best Western Premier Park Hotel, which has a pool, spa, a bar and is adjacent to the State Capitol Building. It’s less than three blocks from Monona Terrace and loved by guests.
A Short Ride Share to Monona Terrace
These hotels are located between half a mile and a mile from Monona Terrace. While not ideal walking distance if you’re dressed up for a wedding or formal event, these are still fairly close and great locations to enjoy other attractions in the downtown area.
If you want a location that is also close to the University of Wisconsin, the Hilton Garden Inn Madison Downtown is a good choice. It’s walking distance from the University and Kohl’s Center and about a mile from Monona Terrace and other downtown attractions.
Also close to the University of Wisconsin are the DoubleTree by Hilton Madson and the Hampton Inn & Suites Madison/Downtown. The Hampton has the Bassett Street Brunch Club attached for a convenient and delicious breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you prefer the complimentary (and warm!) DoubleTree cookie, they are located next door to the Hampton. The Graduate Hotel is all Badger all the time. Connecting rooms are widely available if you have a larger group attending a conference or reception at Monona Terrace (or maybe a football game?). You’ll love the super comfy beds and other amenities the Graduate hotels are known for.
Many hotels on our list have views of either Lake Monona or Lake Mendota, but the Edgewater might have the second-best lake view in the city (Monona Terrace’s view is, of course, number 1!). The Edgewater provides luxurious accommodations, a central location, and amenities galore.
Prefer to be away from the hustle and bustle of the University? Try the Hotel Indigo, which is still in the downtown area but on the far side of the isthmus. One of the newest hotels on our list, it is located in the historic Mautz Paint Company building. Original architecture, modern amenities, and a steak house on site? It’s an easy “yes.”
Other Hotels Options
If you’re looking for something a little different and off the beaten path, downtown Madison has more eclectic options. If you’re staying for more than 3 days, check out The Wilson, a smaller apartment style hotel in a restored, historic 1929 Georgian Revival Building.
If a Bed & Breakfast is more your style, try the charming Hotel Ruby Marie, which is locally owned and operated and features comfortable rooms, onsite dining, and complimentary parking for guests.
